Ugh. Christmas is not about presents, at least not for me. I love spending the time with my family and all the eating and drinking that comes with it. I do enjoy presents, but as I have so much crap I don't need them really. The trick is to have relatives in NZ and then you send half your presents in October. That takes a lot of weight off in December, for sure! And on the three wise men, I always remember in the life of Brian, his mum said after receiving the gifts that “…you can bring more of that gold and frankincense, but none of that funny myrrh stuff!”I think I shall watch that as my christmas movie this year…

It's interesting comparing the systems you have with ours. We are moving to a more 'personalised' system however the money is just not there to fund it appropriately. I suspect a lot of the systems teeter on the edges as a lot of people's unmet needs are not met and therefore can't draw funding away from the more cheaply available care.
I am very cynical because I see these wonderful progressions but with no money behind them, the local authorities will continue to drive out any personalised care with block contracts which are cheaper. If we really do move towards REAL personalised and individual care, the cost implications are massive and noone wants to confront this. It leaves an unhappy medium with care being cheapened and cheapened until the quality suffers considerably.
I am more minded that the different systems that exist, exist to cut costs and meet very broad needs and most critical needs rather than relate to individuals.

I also think doctors and their attorneys are so willing to go to trial because it is so easy to find a substantial number of jurors who are sympathetic to doctors at the outset, regardless of the merits of the case. It’s very difficult to find jurors open to medical malpractice…the overwhelming majority view doctors as the good guys who can do no harm, and even when they do harm, it was in a good faith attempt to heal the patient. Coupled that with hatred of attorneys, especially plaintiff attorneys, and you have a recipe for disaster for the plaintiff and commonly immunity from liability to any doctor that presents well on the stand.
